Equipment

The size and weight of the device, as can be seen from the characteristics table, are quite impressive. Therefore, the box in which the MIE Romeo II ironing press is supplied also makes a serious impression: large and heavy. The box is made of thick glossy cardboard. On the front side there is a photograph of the device itself against the backdrop of the sea, a yacht and flying seagulls. The images are quite transparent, apparently symbolizing the freshness of clean linen, ease of life and ease of ironing using a press. On the side there are photographs, color options and characteristics of three models of ironing presses: Romeo II, Romeo III and Romeo V.

Inside the box, the device is securely fixed using foam inserts. The body of the device is wrapped in a plastic bag, all accessories are placed in a sealed plastic bag. Having opened the box, inside we found:

  • the ironing press itself;
  • two replaceable cartridges for a water container;
  • spare platform cover;
  • a volumetric pad covered with fabric for ironing contour areas;
  • power cable;
  • operating instructions;
  • warranty card.

For testing, a company representative provided us with an ironing press. This accessory comes in a box measuring 43x91x10 cm and weighing 5.4 kg. The packaging is made of corrugated brown cardboard. On the wide side of the box you can see a schematic image of the stand, on the side there is a label with the model name, serial number and the only significant characteristic - height. The height of the stand is adjustable from 68 to 73 cm.

At first sight

At first glance, the design of the device does not seem complicated. Two panels: the lower one - the ironing board and the upper one - the working (heated) panel are connected to each other by a housing in which heating, steam supply, regulation of modes and steam generation occur. On the top of the case you can see a control panel with a display and touch buttons. The upper part of the body is made of deep blue plastic, all other surfaces are white.

When closed, the top panel is secured using two locking buttons located to the right and left of the base of the handle. The handle is designed to open/close the press, to control the automatic supply of steam, and also acts as a lever to increase the pressure of the working surface. The handle is made of plastic that is not smooth to the touch and does not slip in your hands. It is comfortable to hold with one or two hands.

When the locking buttons are lifted, the top panel folds back. If, with the panels in the open position, you continue to pull up the handle, the press comes to the maximum opening position. In this position, you can iron large items or use the press as an ironing board.

The upper working panel is made of Teflon-coated metal. In the center there are two rows of holes for steam to escape. The lower ironing board, also made of a durable and thick metal sheet, has a foam seal. A cover made of heat-resistant fabric with a Teflon component is put on top.

The base on the bottom side is equipped with ventilation holes, a metal strip for mounting on a stand-stand and five legs 2 cm high.

On the left side under the ironing board there is a container with water.

The container cannot be used without a special anti-mineral cartridge.

In the rear wall of the compartment for the water container there is a pump spout that pumps water into the steam generator.

The ironing press kit includes a spare anti-mineral cartridge, a cover made of heat-resistant fabric and a pad for ironing difficult areas of clothing.

The stand for the ironing press is made entirely of metal. It is produced, just like the presses, in three colors: white, silver and black. The height is adjustable in two positions: 73 and 68 cm. The horizontal stand of a complex shape completely follows the outline of the base of the press. There are recesses for the legs, so there are no problems with installing the ironing device. The device is fixed with a special screw on the bottom side of the base. Places itself on the stand stably and reliably.

Instructions

The operating instructions for the MIE Romeo II ironing press are issued in the form of a 14-page A5 brochure. In addition to standard information (safety measures, components and equipment, recommendations for use and care), the document contains tips and advice on ironing different types of linen and clothes. We studied this section with particular passion, because we couldn’t even imagine how you could iron, for example, a man’s shirt using a press. All materials and information are provided with photographs or clearly understandable images. Tips for ironing are given in the form of clear step-by-step algorithms, each stage is provided with a schematic drawing.

The device is classified as a household device, so no special training is required to operate it.

Control

The press is controlled using four touch buttons.

All buttons are labeled and provided with clear pictograms. Upper right - turns the device on/off. The top left is for selecting modes. The two bottom ones, as follows from the captions to them - “Steam Down” and “Steam Up” - activate the lower and upper steam supply.

The device is capable of operating in five temperature modes designed for different types of fabrics:

  • Nylon
  • Silk (silk)
  • Wool (wool)
  • Cotton
  • Linen

In this case, ironing in the first mode involves dry ironing or with a very small amount of steam; at medium temperature conditions, the steam supply increases; at maximum temperature conditions, the steam supply speed also becomes the most powerful. For example, you can iron in Nylon mode without steam at all or only when steam is supplied from the lower platform.

The control panel is conveniently located. The touch buttons respond adequately even with rapid repeated presses. The numbers, letters and symbols on the electronic display glow brightly and are clearly visible even in a sunny room. During operation, the display shows the current temperature of the ironing panel, the selected temperature mode and the signatures of the selected steam supply modes. When the steam reaches the required temperature, next to the name of the operating mode (“Steam Down” and/or “Steam Up”) a steam readiness indicator appears in the form of an obvious pictogram. When the anti-mineral cartridge reaches the end of its service life, the word “Cartridge” begins to light up on the display, and below it is a schematic image of the accessory. Everything is simple and unpretentious.

Usage

Preparation

The press must be placed on a flat, stable and heat-resistant surface. The stand rack is ideal for this purpose. In principle, the press can be installed on a table, the main thing is that the surface of the table is not damaged by exposure to high temperature and humidity. Before starting operation, it is necessary to fill the container provided for this purpose with water. You can use regular tap water or distilled water. Then install the anti-mineral cartridge. Turn on steam, wait about three minutes and lower the handle several times to the steam position.

Actually, the same procedure should be followed during the subsequent operation of the ironing press. The only difference is that at the beginning of the process it is necessary to set the temperature depending on what type of fabric is intended to be ironed.

Ergonomics

In general, the procedure for ironing with a press is as follows: linen is placed and straightened on the ironing board, the upper working (heating) panel is lowered when pressing on the handle, and at the half-closed position the steam supply begins.

Then, when the press is completely lowered onto the ironing platform, the steam supply is stopped, thereby the laundry is smoothed and dried under the influence of the surface temperature of the press.

As you gain experience, using the ironing press becomes more and more comfortable. When processing laundry, you do not need to bend over, your arms, legs and back are not loaded.

The outer surfaces of the press heat up slightly or not at all. Steam enters when the panels are not completely closed, so some caution is required, but, in general, no supernatural safety requirements are imposed. Everything is obvious and at the level of common sense.

The steam is supplied evenly, the power of the jet depends on the selected temperature. Heating up the steam takes some time, i.e. steam is not able to flow continuously. However, this pause is not a disadvantage. While the steam reaches operating temperature, you can lay out a piece of clothing or move an unironed section of laundry. And here we come to the most interesting and difficult moment for a beginner: laying out the laundry. If there are no problems with ironing bed linen, towels, tablecloths or clothes of simple shapes, then processing structurally complex items of clothing requires some experience and skill. In general, you can iron shirts, blouses, skirts and trousers using a press, but it is quite difficult, especially if ironing is not your favorite pastime. You can familiarize yourself with our experience and the difficulties we encountered while working with the ironing press in the corresponding section of the review.

Let us note a few more points that we found interesting and worthy of mention.

  • Each time you turn on the device, it starts working in the temperature mode at which you ironed it last time.
  • The service life of the anti-mineral cartridge depends on the hardness of the water and the duration of the laundry treatment procedure. On average, the accessory lasts about a year under the following conditions: average level of minerals in the water, weekly ironing takes 2-3 hours.
  • If you do not change the cartridge in time, the warning indicator will remain on constantly and the steam generation system will be blocked.
  • It is impossible to use the steam function without installing a cartridge. It is on the outside of the cartridge that there is a hole where the spout of the press pump is inserted, supplying water to the steam generator.
  • If the press is turned on and is closed for more than 10 seconds, an audible signal will sound and the heating process will be suspended. When the press is opened, heating is automatically resumed.
  • The instructions indicate that in the maximum opening position the heating mode of the ironing surface is automatically turned off. But in fact this does not happen, and the working panel continues to heat up. So if there is a need to use the press as an ironing board, you should simply turn it off by pressing the corresponding button.
  • Large items can be easily stored. The wide opening angle of the ironing surface allows you to easily prepare clothes for ironing, as well as fold clothes at the end of the procedure without the risk of getting burned.
  • The press really easily and efficiently smoothes straight things folded in several layers - tablecloths, towels, bed linen. Simple shapes also do not require turning over to iron the side that is not in contact with the ironing panel. A banal T-shirt is thus ironed in literally two movements: first the upper part with sleeves, then the lower half.

Care

The outer surface of the press can be washed with soapy water and wiped dry with a soft cloth. If the ironing board cover is dirty, you can wash it at 40°C. Foam rubber may become deformed during intensive use. In this case, it should be replaced. If stains form on the ironing platform from adhering and burnt residues of detergents, particles of starch, threads, then the stains should be removed. To do this, you can wipe the warm surface with paper or a soft cloth. If you need to remove stubborn stains, you can use an iron cleaning pencil. It is prohibited to use detergents or abrasive materials to clean the ironing surface. During testing, we did not have to clean the device or any of its parts. There were no stains on the surface of the working (heating) panel, and the cover also remained clean.

Testing

Objective tests

The power of the device turned out to be slightly lower than stated. With double steam supply, the maximum recorded power indicator was 2072 W. If steam is supplied only from above, the device consumes between 946 and 964 W.

As for the noise level, it turned out to be very low. The ironing press is equipped with a pump for constant steam generation, so in the half-closed position, when steam is supplied, the device emits a slight hum. The instructions indicate that the noise of the press increases in several cases:

  • the water tank is empty;
  • the press is being used for the first time or has not been used for a long period of time;
  • The anti-mineral cartridge is completely clogged or this accessory has just been replaced.

Note that we did not notice any particularly high noise levels during the first use. When steam was supplied, the device hummed, but not excessively. Later the noise became quieter. The device heats up to operating temperatures from 3 minutes 13 seconds (Nylon mode, 90 °C) to 11 minutes 25 seconds (Linen mode, maximum 180 °C). The press takes almost 8 and a half minutes to heat up to the most popular Cotton mode, with the ironing surface reaching a temperature of 160 °C. The steam generator is ready for use approximately three minutes after turning on the steam function.

In low temperature mode (Nylon), only the bottom steam function is available. For other modes, you can set any direction of steam supply: top, bottom, double. The steam supply strength varies depending on the selected ironing temperature. Thus, the greatest steam formation occurs when ironing linen items. When processing, for example, wool sweaters in the appropriate mode, significantly less steam is released.

During the experiments, we processed different types of fabric, tested different methods of supplying steam, and laid things out in different ways. We ironed both the large bedding we hated and small-sized T-shirts; both a cotton shirt and a wool pullover. The device coped well with all tasks. We had the greatest difficulty processing a man's shirt. There are no difficulties, but sheer pleasure when ironing towels and small bed linen. Below we present the most illustrative, in our opinion, experiments.

A bath towel

A large, dried towel, folded in half, was placed on the ironing surface.

Then they rolled the towel into a narrow roller and placed it behind the ironing surface so that after processing the fabric, they would pull the ironed piece towards themselves, thereby placing a new crumpled piece on the board. The towel was brought into good shape after three contacts with the ironing press. Processing was carried out in Cotton mode with top steam supply.

Result: good .

Very simple, very fast and effortless. Finally, we folded the towel several times and steamed it heartily.

Embroidered towel

We ironed this item only for the sake of embroidery - we needed to see how the ironing press would steam and straighten the areas stretched by the pattern.

Actually, there were no problems with either the embroidery or the pattern at the edge of the towel. Smoothed it out, laying the item in one layer. The temperature and steam supply conditions remained the same as in the previous test.

Result: excellent .

The dry fabric is steamed and straightened, the embroidery and pattern do not gather and do not create wrinkles on the treated fabric.

Bed sheets

In this experiment, we ironed pillowcases, a fitted sheet, and a duvet cover. Processed in Cotton mode with double steam supply. We started with the simplest - pillowcases measuring 40x60 cm.

The pillowcases were smoothed out in literally two movements: one half, then the other.

We folded the duvet cover in half, straightened it out so that the unfinished part was behind the ironing board, and got to work.

Considering that the linen was really wrinkled and four layers of fabric were processed at a time, we got an excellent result. Although turning over the laundry, one could see the creases that had formed, this, in our opinion, is a meager price to pay for the convenience and speed of ironing.

We had the greatest difficulty ironing a sheet with an elastic band. Along the perimeter where the elastic was stretched, a sheet was placed on the ironing board in one layer. But straight fragments could be processed in several layers.

Therefore, we first ironed the difficult areas, then folded the fabric and processed the fabric in two layers. The process took longer than the previous experience with the duvet cover. We think that straight sheets can be ironed much faster.

Result: excellent .

It was in this test that we were convinced that the press is best suited for ironing straight items. Regardless of their size, the process proceeds quickly, without complications or difficulties.

T-shirt with print

An ordinary cotton T-shirt with printed hieroglyphs was processed. Ironed in Cotton mode with top steam supply. We placed and straightened the T-shirt on the ironing board and lowered the press. Then we unfolded the unironed half and straightened it.

If you straighten the item well so that no wrinkles form either on the outside or on the back, the T-shirt can be ironed in two movements.

Result: excellent .

Subsequently, using the same scheme, we ironed long-sleeved T-shirts and a simple knitted sweater (changing the heat mode to Wool and setting the steam supply to double). All experiments passed with excellent results. The procedure takes very little time, which is mainly spent on packing the item and straightening out all the folds and creases. Once you gain experience in using an ironing press, ironing this type of clothing can even be a pleasure.

Organza

To test the ability of the device to smooth synthetic fabrics, heavily wrinkled and overdried organza fabric was processed.

Ironing it in two layers was difficult because the fabric slipped and did not allow me to carefully straighten out the wrinkles from the bottom. Therefore, turning on the Nylon mode, we laid the organza in one layer. In this thermal regime, steam is generated only from the bottom panel, and the jet power is quite small. The fabric did not smooth out well. Increased the temperature to Silk mode. Steam came from both sides and more intensely. In this case, we were able to smooth out the organza to a more acceptable look.

Result: good .

The result cannot be called ideal. However, we gave it a “good” rating due to the high processing speed. If you iron a curtain that is straightened when drying, and not twisted into a knot, as was the case in our case, the fabric can be laid in several layers - then the process will go much faster and with better quality.

Jeans

In general, everything is fine, and jeans can be smoothed out by lowering the press four times, but miracles still don’t happen. Firstly, these jeans are made of thick fabric, so in the steam mode from above we treated them on both sides. Secondly, if you actually iron with four press movements, then obvious traces of ironing in the form of arrows remain on the sides of the jeans. For this reason, we first straightened and worked one half of the leg well, and then turned over and laid the other half so that the fold fell on the seam, and lowered the press again.

Result: good .

As a result, the jeans were ironed well. But if you want the perfect ironing result, you will have to spend some time on it and do a fair bit of digging. However, it is worth noting that all pockets, blotches and other small details were steamed and smoothed out perfectly.

Men's shirt

We saved the scariest thing for us for last. Iron the shirt in accordance with the diagram presented in the instruction manual. We started with the sleeves. The sleeve armhole was placed along the beveled edge of the ironing board. The press was lowered. The outer side of the lower sleeve shows marks from folds and buttons located on the opposite side.

And this is what the reverse side of the sleeve itself looked like. It's worth noting that this is not the final appearance of these parts. Once ironing was complete, we steamed the cuffs and creases on the bottom of the sleeves using the included pad.

After ironing the sleeves, fold them together, cuff to cuff, and position them so that the sleeves hang over the inside of the ironing board. We started ironing the shelf. We straightened the fabric, holding and pulling the shirt by the collar, and pressed it. The second shelf was also ironed without much effort. But we turned the back for a long time this way and that to decide how to iron its upper part, adjacent to the collar. In general, our first experience with the shirt took us quite a significant amount of time. The second one went a little faster, but still turned out to be fraught with difficulties in laying out the sleeves, back and final processing of the cuffs, which is needed to remove creases and wrinkles.

In general, it is possible to iron shirts in a press, but the process is quite labor-intensive. The cuffs require separate steaming; the arrows on the sleeves are also not suitable for every user, which means they need to be steamed and removed. Problems arise with even laying of the upper part of the backrest. We have great difficulty imagining how to iron women's blouses with ruffles and darts near the sleeve or under the bust. It was in this experiment that we realized that it is not in vain that in the classifier of professions there is such a line as “Laundry machine operator”, who is engaged, among other things, in smoothing products using ironing presses.

Result: average .

It’s probably possible to iron shirts or (it’s even scary to imagine) women’s blouses using a press. But, in our opinion, the process is so labor-intensive that questions arise about its feasibility.

conclusions

The MIE Romeo II ironing press turned out to be quite an interesting device to research and test. The device is carefully made, the design can be called modern, the colors offered are pleasant and look expensive, the materials are convenient and safe to use. Good ironing results are ensured by several features of the device: the area of the lower platform, high pressing pressure, a powerful steam jet and the possibility of double steam supply. The advantages include a wide range of operating temperatures and a Teflon coating on the ironing platform. The ironing press is equipped with an electronic water hardness control system (EMC), which prevents the risk of scale formation in the steam generator and monitors the level of mineral salts in the purified water, and also prompts the need to replace the anti-mineral cartridge. Operation is simple, mastering safety precautions and rules for working with the device will not take much time.

The main point of working with an ironing press concerns ironing itself. Ironing towels, tablecloths, simple-cut clothes and bed linen (pillowcases, flat sheets, duvet covers) using this type of device is a pleasure. A duvet cover folded in half steams and smoothes perfectly. The laundry comes out of the press warm, non-burning and dry. Items of a more complex configuration (shirts, skirts, trousers) are much more difficult to cope with. Taking into account these observations, we can suggest that the ironing press can find wide application in areas of activity associated with the professional need to iron large amounts of simple-shaped linen. Mini-hotels, guest houses, small laundries, catering establishments - in service establishments, this device can significantly make life easier for staff and improve the quality of ironing. In the everyday life of an average family, when ironing is required infrequently and mainly on wardrobe items, using an iron, in our opinion, is much easier. Unless, of course, the hostess considers it necessary to iron the bed linen.

When deciding to purchase this device, you should remember its size: you will have to allocate storage space in the apartment. The advantages in this aspect include the ability to use the ironing press as a regular ironing board, that is, if you have a press at home, you can get rid of the ironing board. Let us also note that we found it most convenient to use the press by installing it on a specially designed stand. However, you can also use the press when placing it on a table or other flat horizontal surface.

pros

  • high pressing pressure
  • double steam supply: from the upper and lower platforms
  • wide operating temperature range
  • availability of an electronic water hardness control system
